Cultural Imperative Program
An Invitation to Host a Cultural Imperative Program
April 16, 2019
The Cultural Imperative Initiative (CII) was developed in 2014 by Debra Watkins (Founder and Executive Director of A Black Education Network) and Tony Browder (Founder and Executive Director of IKG). Over the course of four years, Mr. Browder met with students at three different high schools in San Jose, CA and facilitated 50 min. sessions once a month during the school year. The sessions were designed to help students increase cultural awareness and critical thinking skills. In 2018, Ms. Watkins partnered with Mr. Browder to expand CII and successfully piloted the Cultural Imperative Program (CIP) as Saturday Academies in four sites.
Due to the profound impact the Saturday Academies had on the students, their parents and their site coordinators, we decided to extend the opportunity to African American communities throughout the U.S. The Cultural Imperative Program was officially launched in January 2019 and included a total of 10 CIP sites around the country, impacting more than 300 students, families and site coordinators.
Atlantis Browder is the National Director of CIP and we are excited to begin recruitment for the 2020 CIP season. We invite you to apply for a CIP site in your community and ask you to use the following link to access the application to host a site: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfMYJr3LGY0m5Mn-UBvmQt2zeNhxxBpi4_kVoI9mZRIcR63jw/viewform.
Please note that all applications are due June 15, 2019. We have attached an overview of the Cultural Imperative Program to acquaint you with our amazing work.
It is our desire that you will seriously consider extending this culturally enriching program to the young people in your community. We strongly feel that a community that has not prepared their children to succeed them, has failed as a community. This is an obligation which we take seriously and we are pleased to offer you an opportunity to help us shape the minds that will create a world that will enhance the quality of life for people of African ancestry.
